Sheila Hicks’s Araucario (2015) is composed of delicate braids of linen, cotton, and nylon interspersed with araucaria branches—from a family of coniferous evergreen trees found across South America and Oceania. The tiered, spreading whorls of the tree’s leaves contrast the fiber in color and texture but echo its seemingly endless
undulations. Each thread and leaf passes smoothly into the next, creating a rich interplay between the nature’s organic design and handcrafted form.
