Jeffrey Gibson’s "UPSIDE DOWN" is a playfully complex rendition of his characteristic large-scale paintings, synthesizing geometric abstractions and Indigenous visual languages with pop culture references. The painting’s vibrant grid composition alternates in squares of hard-edged radials and portals of gradated colors. Gauzy layers of paint wash over semi-translucent diamond patterns, interwoven in ambiguous delineations of fore and background. This illusion of dimension, slipping in and out of perception, call to mind associations of both Modernist op-art and traditional patchwork quilt designs. Pockets of text quoting Diana Ross’s 1980 song, “Upside Down” evoking the communal joy and queer legacies of the dance club scene.
