Brenda Goodman’s recent studio paintings combine the rich color palette and tactile materiality of her abstract works with the intimacy of a personal setting. The focal point of Studio 3 (2023) is a large, red-toned canvas seated upon an easel. The painting-within-a-painting shows an amorphous, triangular form, filled in with scrawls of red: a visual nod to the work of Philip Guston, a significant influence on Goodman since the start of her career, as well as to her own Praying Figure form. Reproductions of Goodman’s other studio paintings (Studio 1 and Studio 2) are shown leaning on the wall on the left side of the central canvas in Studio 3, linking the works in a narrative of artistic evolution and reflection.
