"Very early painting, I think never exhibited. The Tate gallery has a related work from the same year. The image is a sort of polygonal tollbooth of an old type you see in Britain. It often occurs at the divergence of two roads, so it marks are kind of decision, and one that must be paid for. In form it echoes the octagonal bandstand in the Arnold Circus paintings."
