Featured in the 2019 Whitney Biennial, Jeffrey Gibson's PEOPLE LIKE US incorporates the traditional designs and craft processes of his Cherokee and Choctaw heritage with modern materials and aesthetics of abstraction. These sculptural garments originate from an oversized t-shirt pattern, then adorned with ornamentation and custom-printed fabrics. Gibson considers these garments "symbolic of faith," and an expression of the wearer's identity; evoking the ephemeral qualities of movement and sound, they imagine a vivid, intercommunal sense of empowerment and futurity.
