Louis Fratino’s works evoke the settings, people, and sensations that animate his daily life, revealing a candid intimacy or queerness in its quotidian moments. His relationship to the country and culture of Italy is a guiding throughline of his practice, and a vital perspective through which one views his artistic and personal experiences. The work of Modernist Italian artists, poets, and activists, along with the immersive environments of Italy’s cities and countrysides, provide Fratino with a wide range of subjects and inflections

The beach at Savona (2024) depicts a leisurely daytime scene on the shore of the Northern Italian seaport: figures read or lounge at the water’s edge, while others take a dip into the blue expanse of ocean. Compositionally, the etching draws inspiration from Edgar Degas’ 1887 Beach Scene, particularly in the overcast palette and high horizons. Transposed through the lens of memory and imagination, The beach at Savona captures the quiet subjectivity of the Mediterranean landscape, and of those that inhabit it.

The beach at Savona is printed by Burnet Editions and published by Sikkema Jenkins & Co., at an edition of 25 with 5 AP.
