Heidi Lau's sculptural practice sees clay, in its tactility and malleability, as the ideal conduit to shape monuments of the past as testaments to the present. Ranging in size from intimately-sized figures to site-responsive installations, Lau’s ceramics trace the “landscape experience” often found in traditional Chinese paintings. Her hand-built formations of clay meld an organic sensibility with the totemic presence of ritual items and artifacts. Small-scale glazed ceramic tablets frame portals to another world, offering a glimpse into mythic configurations of time and place.
