Magalie Guérin’s painting practice seeks to expand upon the medium’s formal and ontological possibilities. Her interest lies beyond defined systems of representation or abstraction, instead emphasizing specific pictorial relationships such as figure/ground, pattern/color, and line/form. Geometric patterns unfold and situate themselves amongst amongst painted congregations of rustling greens and deep earth tones. What distinguishes a brushstroke, a space of color, a ridge of built-up medium from each other calls for an openness to shifting visual interpretations. Each painting develops its own self-contained sequence of logic, building a narrative that is perpetually molded by the artist's hand and the viewer's perception.
