Park Avenue Armory 11.02 – 05.23
Overview
Park Avenue Armory Booth B1

For the 35th Anniversary of the The Art Show, Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to exhibit a selection of recent works by Sheila Hicks. The presentation will showcase a monumental bas-relief of pure linen, silk, and cotton “lianes,” along with soft sculpture “boules” and a series of intimately-scaled minimes.”

Sheila Hicks’s boundary-crossing career of over six decades of relentless innovation has been informed by a broad range of cultural and geographical contexts and material sensibilities. Her cross-disciplinary, cosmopolitan perspective developed during her early research in Latin America in the late 1950s, exploring the region’s centuries-old traditions and photographing major archaeological sites. From 1959 to 1964, after living and working in Mexico, she settled in Paris. With Paris as her base, she began spending intense, collaborative periods in cities across the world. These transcultural dialogues contributed to the development of Hicks’ highly personal voice and artistic expression, embracing art, architecture, design, and craftsmanship.

Hicks' newest large-scale assemblage of "Lianes" is composed of over seventy elements spanning sixteen feet, a tour de force expression of one of her unique, signature environments. Also exhibited will be soft sculpture and a selection of "minimes," confidential conversations created with unexpected natural and found materials composed on improvised armatures.
