"This is maybe the oddest example here of the ‘shape’ presence. It is just ‘mashed up’ with descriptive figuration– the garden and the hobby horse rider. It’s a bit like like an apparition to the boy. Of course there is something phallic about the hobby horse (sometimes called a ‘cock horse’). There’s a relationship to the sex paintings in this selection. But the lozenge shape in my works, though it could be said to have genital characteristics, is not obviously ‘symbolic’ in that way."
