The ontological function of language and mutability of text and image constitute the foundation of Kay Rosen's practice. She considers language to be “found material,” with the potential to engender new readings through minimal intervention. Meticulously hand-painted, her works utilize a range of graphic strategies or to shift one’s interpretation of otherwise standard words and phrases and often tease out the humorous potential within them. In the vibrant, green "Spring," the letter "n" has been removed to leave a blank white space separating the first four letters from the final "g". Viewers understand the rearranged composition through multiple meanings, including the image of the "sprig" of a plant, growing in spring, and the action of "springing" from one letter to another over the gap in typography.
