Maria Nepomuceno’s vibrant sculptures and wall installations meld the organic with the inorganic, in both shape and substance. Her practice integrates traditional Brazilian craftsmanship and contemporary materials into her own personal techniques of sewing, weaving, beading, and ceramics. "Boca de Cobra" (literally "the mouth of the snake") was first shown in Nepomuceno's solo exhibition 'Cunho' at Sikkema Malloy Jenkins this past fall. These recent body of works continue to explore embodiments of abundance and perpetual expansion. In "Boca da Cobra," a spiral-braided rope connected to a ceramic orb loops into and through a woven, beaded body. The work's interconnected structure evokes the image of the ouroboros, consuming itself in an endless cycle of death and rebirth, and the endless permutations of the universal spiral form.
Maria Nepomuceno was born in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, where she continues to live. Her work is currently featured in 'Folia' at Abdülmecid Efendi Mansion in Istanbul, and 'El Árbol del Mundo [The World Tree] - 24 Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala. Selected solo exhibitions include 'Big Bang Boca' at Instituto Artium de Cultura, São Paulo, Brazil (2023); 'Dentro e fora infinitamente' at SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia (2022); and Refloresta! at the Portico Library, Manchester, United Kingdom (2021).
