Throughout his career, Arturo Herrera has developed a diverse body of work—most prominently collage, felt sculpture, and wall painting—that references the complex legacy of abstraction using modernist strategies of fragmentation, re-composition, and repetition. His pieces often employ found material, gesturing visually towards of figures and imagery derived from popular culture towards a multiplicity of readings and interpretations. The generative tension between what is concealed and what is revealed, is a locus of interest for Herrera; layering, collaging, and painting, his forms overlap and intermingle with one another, alternately obscuring areas of the image while prompting viewers to expand their vision of what could be, but is not, seen.
