Sasi guztien gainetik (Over the Brambles) is the first exhibition in Spain dedicated to Marlene McCarty, a key figure in feminist art and activism. Throughout her four-decade career, McCarty has focused her work on the human body—particularly the female body—to critically reflect on the social, familial, and biological systems that influence it.
Plants take center stage in her most recent work, which explores human-plant relationships and the knowledge systems of medicinal botany passed down by women throughout history. Curated by Maite Garbayo-Maeztu, Sasi guztien gainetik combines historical pieces with new productions, including a large-scale installation featuring live plants selected for their symbolic and cultural significance.
To situate her research on the ancestral relationship between humans and plants within the present context, McCarty collaborated with ethnobotanist Clara Gutiérrez Arana. Many of the exhibited plants grow in the wild in the Basque Country, and are linked to medieval traditions and medicinal uses.
Sasi guztien gainetik (Over the Brambles) is on view at Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture from October 17, 2025, through February 1, 2026.
