Overview
"There can be all kinds of emotions, insights, or desires that come when you see just a fraction of a figure—it creates these waves of awareness that are not controlled by me but by the viewer."
Arturo Herrera creates colorful abstract paintings using the visual strategies of fragmentation, repetition, and reconstruction. His diverse body of work—most prominently utilizing collage, felt sculpture, and wall painting—references the complex legacy of abstraction using modernist visual languages. Often utilizing found material and sourced elements, Herrera’s work incorporates discrete iconography and familiar imagery to provoke a multiplicity of references and readings interpreted by the viewer.
Arturo Herrera (born 1959, Caracas, Venezuela) received a BFA from the University of Tulsa and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions include Arturo Herrera: Fare un giro at Spazia Supernova, Rome, Italy (2024); Arturo Herrera: You are here at SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico (2024); Arturo Herrera: Between at The Contemporary Dayton, Ohio (2023); Constructed Collage at Ruby City, San Antonio, Texas (2022-23); and Mirror and Feld-Haus Projects, Berlin (2022). Herrera’s long-term, site-specific wall installations can be seen at The Bass Museum of Art, Miami, Florida; Bloomberg European Headquarters, London; FORMA Miami, Florida; and the Tate Modern, London.
Herrera’s work can be found in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; and the Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, ArtPace San Antonio, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and the DAAD, Berlin. Herrera lives and works in Berlin.
